Mildly [as in, manically] obsessed with old heads with implanted hair, I came across this one in an obscure old town in Europe. It’s a mere 13 inches tall. When I got my hands on it, it was covered in some sort of soot and ashy dirt. I was not sure of the kind of hair fiber, until I started washing it. It started reeking of goat. It was yak hair. It turned out to be an alluring pure white color, resembling coarse human hair in texture and behavior. Endless hours of hair play ahead.

Been studying Kim Novak’s hair in Vertigo again. Hitchcock seems to have been obsessed with using it as a character, these loving close ups make it so obvious. Many shots are composed around her hairstyles [all delicate wigs] and often, the actual lens focus is on her hair, not the faces. The swirl chignon isn’t there for mere decoration, built like a dizzying vortex leading into a dark hole. When Madeleine needs to seem upset, her hair tells part of the story. When she’s in top form seducing Scotty, not a single hair out of place, even on a windy hilltop. When she needs to inspire Scotty’s sympathy and protection, her hair is at its most vulnerable, exposed, sad wet tendrils, crying on her back. Her hair is a main character in the diabolical plot against poor, dazzled Scotty.

Not gone with the wind. Elnett-ed to infinity.

Sad, confused chignon.

Ready for its close up. One of many.

Another miracle of senses is inspired by the two different shots used when Scotty sees Madeleine for the first time. This scene was reshot after filming had been completed [Novak had looked in the camera by mistake] and bears signs of inevitable slips in continuity. Can you guess which is the latter version? It’s the one with the redder background.

Judy is a mere brunette, a lesser breed. She knows it. “I’m just a girl.”

As Judy, she disappears into the background. She has no light.

“I don’t care about me anymore.”

More can be said about Midge’s [sensible] hairstyle and about Carlotta Valdez’ [severe] hairstyle.
Anyway, meet Kim’s wig head, on which Max Factor created her Vertigo wigs.

Incessantly collecting (and using) old school hairstyling tools.
They don’t make rollers like these anymore. These metal ones are from the early 40s. They retain heat and transmit it into the hair long after you take them out of the dryer, making for a tighter curl. Their mesh construction renders them unsuitable for fine bleached hair, as they will leave dents. But perfect for thick, virgin hair. The spring coil ones, are in such rare small sizes, perfect for sideburns, baby hair, nape curls and for sneaking them between large ones where needed. These bad girls have just arrived, to join an army of long forgotten, strange old (very useful) curlers in my arsenal of old tools.
(also, observe the early 30′s pin curl clips, that are formed in a way that doesn’t crush the hair!)

I hadn’t been home in a few months, I had missed interacting with them, more than I care to admit.
Mdvanii is an entirely handmade doll, 10 inches tall, made in Paris in the late 80s. She’s cast in fragile resin, has hand-painted features and human hair wigs. Her outfits were sewn by the same seamstresses that worked at the haute couture houses of that time, using scraps of fabric left from haute creations. Her wigs were crafted by the same artisans that made the wigs for the Moulin Rouge showgirls. She was made in very limited editions, each doll is different and identified by a unique number and name. Very rare and quite expensive, she is the most exquisite and sensually stimulating doll I have ever touched.

Did a story for Votre Beauté the other day, working with an older model, Vanessa, a top model in her prime. I had been longing to work with a body that’s not 18 years old. It triggered an unfamiliar empathy and tenderness in me, as I handled her.

..and a mohawk kind of thing, for another story and cover try.

A few weeks ago, I designed the hairstyles for Celia Kritharioti’s runway show for the Madwalk Fashion Rocks event. It was a last moment assignment so I spent a week without hardly any sleep, to prepare. The combination of lack of sleep/food with inhaling massive clouds of hairspray, was hallucinations-inducing.

Initial sketches and tests.

Back at the studio, preparing enough hair for 18 girls. The lineup of models kept changing and thus, the hair colors that were required.

6am call, I fell into an assembly line trance, models sitting down, getting done, next.

I don’t remember much from that day, most of it I later saw in photos online.

18 girls in 13 hours, in a hairstyle that required 1 hour and 20 minutes, getting it down to 45 mins for each model, with the help of the assistants that my agents got for me. When it was over, I felt exactly as if I was drunk. Loved it. Fell inside a taxi and slept the way home.

Fascinating, the level of fine craftsmanship that went into the making of these exquisite shop window mannequins. Pierre Imans in Paris and Irwin Culver in New York, early 20s. Due to the fact that they were made of vulnerable organic materials such as glass, wax, paper and human hair, so few of them survive today in good condition but I’m hell bent on acquiring one to study.

Been researching the Petitcollin dolls, made in Paris in the 50s. Strung celluloid bodies, hand painted features and mohair wigs, very light weight and with a delicious satin skin finish. More often than not, they look like children dressed up and padded up to portray adults. I like what I found under the rather exquisite [for their dime store status] outfit.

Some of the looks I did for a recent Votre Beauté magazine shoot, with the outworldly Quinta Witzel.

One of the hairstyles was directly inspired by one of my most favorite films as a kid, “The Moon-Spinners“, the 1964 Hayley Mills film by Disney. As a child I had marveled at Pola Negri’s hairstyle, the dubious, jewels-lusting “Madame Habib” bob with a chic bun on top and although I had recreated it on dolls countless times, I had to try it on a human.

Elle magazine shoot today, for a Spring 2011 trends editorial, where I discovered that said trends are color-FULL. Got to work again with the wonderful Charlotte Tomaszewska.

Dyed some of the front pieces and added a customized wig.

After that, I grabbed Charlotte and we ran to a barber shop close by, where they let me wash her hair so I could start over. For the remaining of the shots, I added 22-inch-long European human hair extensions and played around with them.

Very excited to use my 1930s metal curlers to set this custom lace wig, after I dyed her pink. They are genius, because they continue to generate heat into the hair, long after you remove the wig from the dryer, giving a stronger hold.

I’m always vehemently researching the great old artists that worked at the movie studios from as early as 1915. Max Factor, Eddie Senz, Jack Pierce, Perc Westmore. The tools and techniques they came up with, are still what we use today.

As usual, I got carried away and made the back more elaborate than needed. As it is, the camera never saw it. This was for the current issue of Vogue. The set was a late 50s Frank Loyd Wright kind of pad, which whispered “Marnie” to my ear.

One of the outfits was Filep’s, the same one I had done a few weeks ago.
